The Village
Aug 06 2004 - I admit M. Night Shymalan has a cult and I am a follower. However, The Village failed to rise above Unbreakable and just barely hovers above Signs.
The Story - There seems to be a boundary between the woods and the Village. Evil creatures and humans have a mutual understanding, not to cross into each other's territory. Apparently yellow is a safe colour for the villages when walking into the woods, and red is a forbidden colour, the colour of the evil creatures. Huh... *ponder* How did they derive that?
Anyway, a series of events leads to a seriously injured Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix), in dire need of medical supplies available only in the next town, through the woods. No one dares crosses the border for fear of provoking the creatures, except.. Ivy Walker (Bryce Howard) who's deepyly in love with Hunt and was to be married on that very day. Some say love is blind, well, so is Ivy, which makes the story a little more interesting !
Bryce Howard, daughter of Ron Howard (producer, A Beautiful Mind etc) potrays dim-sighted Ivy with much conviction. But I wondered, when she came to a road, how did she know to go left and not right? hm...
Not scary la! - A little humour was incorporated in this not very scary movie, ala Signs. I waited for a twist which never came, sigh. Some say I should watch The Sixth Sense instead. Maybe this story is in need of a stronger actor like Samuel L. Jackson in Unbreakable. Definitely quashed my future expectations of Shymalan, this show has.
