Enriching - The sound quality even in a cinema was superbly rich. As I closed my eyes, I could imagine the Phantom (Butler) singing right beside me. His voice was as soothing as Josh Groban, melting every girl's heart into a puddle everytime he sings. I shall be hearing music from the OST in my head for a very long time to come.
Alas, beauty is only skin deep Phantom's my hearthrob of the year! Ok, that and Raoul (Patrick Wilson) gives his stiff competition!
The story - Hidden deep in the dungeons of the old Opera House, the Phantom secretly trains a curious, young ballet dancer, Christine Daee (Rossum) into a prima donna. Not having discovered the identity of her secret trainer, Daee believes him to be an 'Angel of Music' sent by her deceased beloved father.
Love is blind - Blindly giving her heart and soul into her music, a strong bond then grows between Daee and the Phantom. In the old days, society despises those whom are different, can this love transpire into a 'normal' relationship between the two?
Stage vs Screen? - On silver screen, the Phantom's underground lair projects a very eerie, mysterious feeling. I don't see how this feel could be conveyed by 2D backdrops in the stage musical. Furthermore, the story has space to dwelve into the character as Rossum 'grew' Daee from a young, shy ballet dancer into a prima donna willing to risk herself to lure out the Phantom.
Oh well, while waiting for this stage musical to come closer to our shores, the screen will have to do. Sound of Music's live stage musical, anyone?
Quirky..
